EDEN CONFIDENTIAL: Richard E. Grant’s Oscar-Worthy ‘Bout’ With Podcast Host Richard Herring

When Richard E. Grant was nominated for an Oscar, he portrayed himself as a blushing ingenue in a social media campaign of celebrity selfies and exuberant videos that earned him a legion of new fans.

Now, however, another side to his character has emerged, which makes him seem like a somewhat humorless and selfish luvvie.

Comedian Richard Herring has revealed an interview he conducted with Grant was banned by the Withnail And I star after he joked about the actor’s talent.

When Richard E. Grant was nominated for an Oscar, he portrayed himself as a blushing ingenue in a social media campaign of celebrity selfies and exuberant videos that earned him a legion of new fans.

Herring, now 55, chatted with Grant, 65, in front of a live audience in 2019 shortly after the Oscars.

Grant, pictured, was nominated for Best Supporting Actor for his role in Can You Ever Forgive Me? but failed to win.

Speaking on his RHLSTP podcast, Herring says, “A couple went wrong without me realizing it. Richard E. Grant wouldn’t let me get his and I don’t understand why.

“It was one of the best we’ve ever done…And he blocked me on Twitter so I can’t even ask him.”

Herring adds: “He hadn’t won the Oscar but he had been nominated and everyone had said before, ‘He’s all giddy and acting because he’s trying to impress voters, he’s just acting’ .

“And he said, ‘Yeah, that was very boring for me because I was just enjoying the thing.

‘I said, ‘Yeah, and if you were such a good actor, you would have won the Oscar, right?’

Speaking on the Walking The Dog podcast, Herring adds: ‘It occurred to me at the time, he could walk away or it could be the best comedy ever… if he takes it in a good way, which was like a joke.

“He seemed to like it at the time. I think that was the general impression – he felt like I was taking the mickey away from him, which I wasn’t.

Grant could not be reached for comment.

Sandra Howard hopes supporters of the two rival Tory leadership candidates will suspend hostilities at the launch party for her new novel, Love At War.

“I know there will be Tory MPs and statesmen who are former supporters of Rishi and Liz,” said the model-turned-author, who is married to former Tory leader Lord Howard.

“But while they may disagree on taxation and politics, I think anyone is highly unlikely to get into heated political debates at what is, after all, a book launch.”

I will keep you posted…

Freya’s wild bond with a pet lion cub

Most teens would be terrified of coming face to face with a lion, but Freya Aspinall is made for tougher things.

The 18-year-old, who grew up at her father Damian’s animal parks in Kent, shared this photo of her pet lion Azi biting her arm.

Freya says she has a close bond with the one-year-old.

“We had to raise Azi because his mother rejected him,” she says. “From there, I was able to develop a completely natural relationship with him. No training, no taming. Pure love and trust.

He may be vegan, but that hasn’t deterred Chris Packham from sinking his teeth into the BBC, which pays him handsomely for presenting Springwatch. After watching his coverage of the Tory leadership debate, Packham laments: ‘Why this miserable fiasco on BBC One?’

Tim Bonner of the Countryside Alliance tells me that Packham should be “free to express his views…but the BBC should be equally clear that it cannot employ presenters who destroy its reputation for impartiality”.

A BBC source said Packham was not bound by its impartiality guidelines as he did not work in current affairs or current affairs.

The joy of Anthea’s wedding. . . but it’s still not his

Anthea Turner announced her engagement to socialite Mark Armstrong almost three years ago, but was beaten at the altar by ex-daughter-in-law Amelia Bovey.

The former Blue Peter presenter, 62, has remained close to her second husband Grant Bovey’s three daughters.

Amelia, 29, invited Anthea and Armstrong to her wedding to Gloucester rugby player Freddie Clarke.

“Don’t we all love a wedding,” says Anthea, whose wedding in Italy has been postponed due to the pandemic. She and Armstrong, upstairs, are now planning a winter ceremony here.

“Everyone is very excited about winter glamour,” she adds.

Armstrong seems enthusiastic about the “summer glam” – he was later photographed wearing his fiancee’s hat.
