Episode 187 of The Electronic Wireless Show podcast: the funniest games special

After some of the stuff we talked about in last week’s episode, I decided to take us further down the laughter fall to talk about fun games in general. What games are funny? Why and how? Is it easier for games to be funny when they’re not trying to be? Should self-proclaimed fun games be avoided altogether?

For this reason, we end up talking about Blorko again. We also came close to going to war over the difference between improvising funny random stuff and deciding that saying “egg” a lot is funny. There is a difference, but you know it when you see it. Matthew’s life is like a sitcom, and we also apologize to Henry Cavill for forgetting his birthday. Sorry Henry. Please come on the show.

You can listen on Spotify, or above, or go straight to Soundcloud where you can download it for later. You can also discuss the episode on our Discord channel, which has a dedicated podcast chat room.

You can also get the RSS feed here or find it on iTunes, Stitcher or Pocket Casts.

. The music is by Jack de Quidt, which is very funny.

Remarks
We’re talking pretty broadly about Physics Wonk Games as a whole – Totally Accurate Battle Simulator, Surgeon Simulator, I Am Bread, Octodad, and others. Wibbly physics gets you going lol.

For starters, there’s a discussion of Tales From The Borderlands, a very funny game, versus Borderlands proper, games that aren’t quite as funny. To be fair, it’s a lot easier for TFTB to be funny because there are a lot more verbs beyond “shoot” and “loot” for developers to play around with.

Matthew really liked The Magic Circle. I compare it to There Is No Game, which I ended up finding quite sufficient, but which Matthew did.

Nate, in typical Nate style, loves when games go wrong. For example, you’re in a serious cutscene, then the corpse of a soldier you previously killed squirms the wrong way up a hill. He thinks Ark: Survival Evolved is funny for related reasons.

He doesn’t like Monkey Island, although I think Monkey Island is really an example of a fun game. We largely agree that being too internet and SEO is bad, and yet I also think Turnip Boy Does Tax Evasion is really funny.

Also, the goose.

Recommendations this week are the Tokyo Vice TV show, the A&F documentary White Hot, and Graze’s Lemon and Bluberry Oat Squares.
